The Marriage Feast, a Dress-Up Affair?

Handbook 3: Article 15 - Spiritual Facts or Fiction

"The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must shortly come to pass."

Revelation 1:1

"...Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb... These are the true words of God."

Revelation 19:9

A Parable:

"Jesus spoke to them again in parables saying, 'The kingdom may be compared to a man, a king, who made a wedding feast for his son and he sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast but they were unwilling to come. Again he sent out other slaves... But they paid no attention and went their way... Then he said to his slaves, "The wedding is ready but those who were invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main highways and as many as you find, invite to the wedding feast." And those slaves went out into the streets, and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests.

But when the king came in to look over the guests, he saw a man not dressed in wedding clothes, and he said to him, "Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?" And he was speechless. Then the king said to his servants, "Bind him hand a foot and cast him into outer darkness..." For many are called but few are chosen.'"

Matthew 22:1-14

There was a custom at one time that helped me catch a glimpse into the possible meaning of this parable. The expectant bridegroom bought many bolts of cloth, all the same pattern and color, all the same material. From this cloth he fashioned not only his own wedding attire, but also the wedding attire of "his" invited guests. In this way, those who belonged to him were immediately recognizable.
