The Word of the Lord to Haggai and Zechariah

Handbook 4: Article 20 - Part 3: An Appointed Time, an Appointed Work: Restoring God's House!

"...once more in a little while..."

The people of God who returned from the exile in Babylon succeeded through the prophesying of Haggai and Zechariah. But it is from Ezra, who first spoke these words to the people after the return from Babylon, that we "who believe in Him," whose hearts are lifted up and whose spirits are stirred, receive this same commission to restore the ruins of the house of the Lord in this generation.

"Now for a brief moment grace has been shown from the Lord our God to leave us an escaped remnant... to give us a reviving to raise up the house of the Lord, to restore its ruins..."

Ezra 9:8, 9

We too, an "escaped remnant" have been given encouragement through the prophesying of Zechariah.

"Let your hands be strong, you who are listening in these days to these words from the mouth of the prophets, those who spoke in the days that the foundation of the house of the Lord of hosts was laid, to the end that the temple might be built."

Zechariah 8:9

"On 21st day of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet...

(And although His words were spoken by Haggai to the remnant that had returned, the word from the Lord is also speaking of His house at a "later time.")

Speak now to Zerubbabel... and to Joshua... the high priest, and to the remnant of of the people saying, 'Who is left among you who saw the house in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem to you like nothing in comparison?

Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and also the dry land. And I will shake all the nations, and the Desire of all nations will come with the wealth of all nations; and I will fill this house with glory,' says the Lord of hosts. 'The silver is Mine, the gold is Mine'... 'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former... and in this place I shall give peace...'"

Haggai 2:1-3, 6-9

Zechariah also speaks of a later time to Joshua and his friends.

"Thus says the Lord of hosts... 'Now listen, Joshua, the high priest, you and your friends who are sitting in front of you - indeed they are men who are a symbol for behold; I am going to bring in My Servant the Branch.'"

Zechariah 3:8

"...Behold, a man whose name is Branch for He will branch out from where He is; and He will build the temple of the Lord, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices (lit. of them)...

And those who are far off will come, and build the temple of the Lord. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. And it will take place, if you completely obey the Lord your God."

Zechariah 6:12, 13, 15

Again:

"'...Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and also the dry land. And I will shake all the nations, and the Desire of all nations will come with the wealth of all nations; and I will fill this house with glory,' says the Lord of hosts... 'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former... and in this place I shall give peace...'"
