I AM

Handbook 1: Article 32 - A More Excellent Way

Did you ever think it strange -- God's Name -- "I AM"? What can it mean? It is very important for us as human beings that we understand what is involved in God claiming this name for Himself.

"I AM", God said. This statement contains the truth, the whole truth. He is the complete one, the fullness of existence. This title precludes man ever saying the same thing about himself. To assert, "I am" after God has reserved this for Himself is an attempt to take His place -- to make ourselves a god. If we could give ourselves a title in reference to God it would have to be something like this: "GOD IS", therefore I can be or I can become.

Humans all over the world are running around, beating their breasts like Tarzan and crying, "I am". "Pay attention to me. See me. Move out of the way, here I come". Little do they realize the arrogance of what they are saying. Women, especially, are taking up this chant. I am ashamed. For whether we believe it or not, apart from God, we are futility, waste, sheer pretense, a blowing in the wind, only a transient form of life.

To be and to continue to be I must not only recognize God as I AM but find my life in Him.

"In Him, we live and move and have our being."
